Serial Killers: Speech Analysis

An introduction is presented.
1. Attracting attention
Unfortunately, murder is a very common crime in our society. While killing one person is an awful act, it is still a terrible crime to do so. Officially, serial killers are those who have killed more than three people.

2. Establishing relevance
This is a dangerous group of murderers. Their victims can range in number from 3-5 to over 100. Even more frightening about serial killers are the fact that it is not known how many victims they have. Some killers may have killed more people than was officially reported.

3. Establishing credibility
Even though most serial killers are dead or in prison, they still exist. It is not clear if there will ever be another victim. Unfortunately, scientists are still not able to agree on what makes someone a brutal killer machine after so many years.

4. My thesis statement is _______________________________________________________________.
One thing is certain: Serial killers often have a psychological instability, are void of any regret for their actions, and get pleasure from murder.

Key words/phrases from the speech

1. Psychoopathic killers
Psychological studies have shown that most serial killers were psychopaths and schizophrenia. Their mental disorders are often mysterious. However, there are many possible causes, including abuse in childhood, out-of control sexual fantasies, and antisocial personality disorder. The FBI established the Behavioral Science unit in 1974. It was charged with interviewing 36 serial criminals to learn their motivations and psychological makeup (“The Psychology of Serial Killers” paragraph 6). FBI used this interview to determine the types of serial killers.

Organized killers plot their assassinations ahead of time, often planning each step. Disorganized killers tend to be more unpredictable and attack their victims without thinking about it. Jack the Ripper is a famous serial killer from England who created a media boom. Jack the Ripper is well-known for his brutally cutting off five prostitutes in a murder spree. Dr. Thomas Bond, who was responsible to inspect the bodies, described Jack The Ripper as a “man of solitary behaviours, subjected to periodic attacks of homocidal and eroticmania” (Bohn, par.8). Ripper did more than kill his victims. It was Ripper’s personal signature.

2. Killers of cold blood
Another characteristic most serial killers share is their total lack of pity and remorse. Ted Bundy (a well-known American serial slayer, rapist, necrophile) said that he didn’t feel guilty for anything. I feel sorry that people feel guilt” (Brogaard para. Ted Bundy has 30 homicides which have been officially proved, but it is likely that there are many more. His victims were mostly women that resembled his college roommate. His plan for their fate was at best horrifying. He would rape, sometimes with the help of a handsaw, their heads and then take the body parts to make souvenirs. It is believed that he also practiced cannibalism. Bundy is a person many people wonder about. This behavior is possible. Child abuse is sometimes cited as the reason for the lack of certain emotions. A child can develop a physical disability that blocks them from feeling certain emotions. Scientists think this could be why children lose empathy and the ability of other people to feel their emotions.

3. Hedonistic murderers who are driven by desire
Hedonistic killers are those who kill people for their pleasure. They primarily use their sexual pleasure as a motivation to commit murder. Hedonistic murderers will often begin or follow (necrophilia), a rape.
Hedonistic killers look a lot like drug addicts. They rely on sex as their drug. Jeffrey Dahmer was a notorious American Hedonistic Killer. He murdered 17 men and girls because he longed for necrophilia. His family abandoned him, and his neighbors molested him. Dahmer was a child when he abused animals and displayed his perverted vision of reality. Dahmer often fantasized about the death and crippling of other men, and was always looking for a partner in sex. His prison inmate killed Dahmer in 1994.
